The last game of the home and away season was played against 4th place Colonge. An undermanned opposition meant 4 selfless Dockers players (H Wyatt, S Loch, M Krey and N Trezbiatowsky) put on a Lions jumper for the day. For the first time this season, the weather was wet and wild. Torrential rain for long periods made it tough under foot, the ball was like a bar of soap and the contests extremely fierce. The first quarter saw the Dockers waste some golden opportunites but also featured 2 goals from K D’Arcy who hadn’t played since round 2. The backline held strong in the blustery conditions keeping the Lions to 1 behind. The second was much of the same, the midfield ran riot with H Clarkson and P May winning clearance after clearance and captain J Satory doing a number on former Docker-turned-Lion star P Evermann. On a sour note, utility L Gillard who travelled up from Munich for the game, looked to have seriously hurt his lower leg. At half time, the boys had plenty to say and wanted to improve some finer accepts of the game. The Dockers were comfortably in front 6.8.43 – 0.1.1 but it was a far from being over.
The premiership quarter was when the Dockers were able to put the game to bed. A Drechsler was outstanding in ruck giving the midfield first use as our premium ruckman F Naumann mopped everything across half back. Veteran K Fletcher came to life and kicked 3 goals to finish off any chance for the Lions. As the rain poured down in the 4th, the Dockers again finished strongly as the stingiest backline in the AFLG kept the Rheinland Lions to 0.2.2 for the day whilst kicking 16.19.115 themselves.
Heading into the finals, the Dockers are in solid form and will face the Lions again in the first final, but as we all know the finals are a different ball game.
Best players for the day were J Satory, K D’Arcy, F Naumann, P May and S Heiner Hennessy.
On behalf of the Dockers I’d like to thank Colonge for the game, we look forward to visiting you in 2 week’s time and hopefully booking a ticket to Dresden!
I’d like to take this opportunity to thank the committee, all volunteers, players and supporters for their on-going support throughout the 2018 season. I can assure you that we will leave no stone unturned in our quest for the glory.
